Using Insurance for Dietitian Appointments

Sanders Nutrition is in network with Aetna (as of June of 2025!).

If you have Aetna insurance of any state, I will file insurance claims on your behalf.

If you will be using your Aetna health insurance policy to cover a portion of your nutrition therapy, you will need to understand your coverage, including your co-pays, co-insurance and deductible.

I ask that you contact your insurance company prior to your first visit so we have a clear understanding of what is covered (see below).

To do this, you will call the Customer Service telephone number on the back of your insurance card prior to your first visit.

When calling your insurance company, ask the following questions to help determine your coverage:

  1. Is Sanders Nutrition (NPI number 1548852619) currently an in-network provider for my plan?

  2. If no, what are my out of network benefits for medical nutrition therapy?

  3. If yes, does my plan cover outpatient nutrition therapy?

    • CPT codes 97802, 97803, 97904, or S9470 (“nutritional counseling”)?

    • If you have diabetes, you may also want to ask about diabetes management codes, G0108 (individual) and G0109 (group).

  4. How many sessions are covered per year?

  5. Do I have any nutrition counseling visits covered under the preventative care portion of my plan, (ICD-10 code z71.3 + BMI code)?

  6. Do I have coverage for services provided via telehealth?

  7. Do I need a physician referral?

  8. Do I have a deductible for “Nutritional Counseling Services?”

    • If yes, how much is it and how much has been met so far?

  9. Is there a copayment for each visit or do I have co-insurance?

    1. If I have co-insurance, what is the percentage of coverage?

  10. Write down and keep the reference number and name of the representative for your call.
