7 signs that it’s time to see an anti-diet dietitian

When do you need to see a non-diet, HAES®-aligned dietitian?

Just like not all doctors specialize in all diseases or medical concerns, neither do dietitians! Dietitians work in a wide variety of practice areas and settings and it is important to find a dietitian whose experience, skills and approach are aligned with your needs and preferences.

When to work with an anti-diet, weight-inclusive Registered Dietitian:

  1. You want to learn how to listen to your hunger/fullness cues, and trust them

  2. You want to improve your body image

  3. You want to learn how to work with your body, not against it

  4. You want to improve your relationship to food

  5. You want to ditch dieting

  6. You want to improve your health in a shame-free, non- judgemental space

  7. You want to feel in charge of your own healthcare

Why it's ESSENTIAL to see a dietitian who specializes in eating disorders & disordered eating if you are struggling in your relationship to food/body/movement:

  • A non-specialized RD may not even recognize you have an eating disorder unless you tell them. And if you do tell them, they will likely not be equipped on how to treat it.

  • Eating Disorder dietitians will not praise your eating disorder and other behaviors as "healthy eating", allowing the condition to continue/worsen.

  • We're trained to be keen on discerning disordered eating behaviors and red flags for tendencies and behaviors that may erupt into a full-blown eating disorder.

  • A specialized dietitian would never work solo when caring for a client in the throws of an eating disorder. We understand the importance and necessity of collaboration with a team - including a medical doctor/nurse practitioner/physician assistant, psychiatrist, therapist, recovery coach, etc -- in addition to your support system!

  • We are committed to providing the utmost care, which involves having regular supervision from an accredited supervisor.

  • We are trained to see past BMI categories and "normal" percentiles to decipher where your body needs and wants to be for a full recovery.

  • We recognize how important full nutrition restoration is to a full recovery.

Some benefits of working with an anti-diet HAES ® aligned dietitian:

  • Food confidence - feel more intentional about your food choices

  • An end to yo-yo dieting

  • Increased connection to your body -- get in touch with your hunger, fullness & satisfaction cues

  • Reduction in food anxiety

  • Improved body image

  • Receive respectful care

  • Find a more normalized eating pattern tailored to you

  • Build self-compassion

  • Healed relationship with exercise/movement

  • & really whatever it is that YOU need to focus on!
